How do I first get started?
It is not unusual to be concerned about learning to fit into the gym environment. How do I share machines with someone? How do I get help if I need it? All of these are common questions members ask during their first month or two with us. The following guide should help you get started, or simply ask the first staff member you see if your question is not included here.
What do I wear to work out in?
Most people wear loose-fitting gym shorts and a t-shirt. Tennis shoes are a must; please, no street shoes or sandals. Many of our members wear compression shorts under their gym shorts, which are tight-fitting and help your muscles stay supported and warm. Jeans should not be worn.
What is the proper pool attire?
If you are using the pool or hot tub, appropriate swimwear must be worn at all times. Due to health regulations, all members are asked to shower before entering the pool, sauna, or spa. Please read additional rules and regulations required by the health department posted in the pool area. Children that are not potty trained must have an appropriate swim diaper on at all time (available for purchase at the front desk).
How do I get a locker or towel when I visit the gym?
Day lockers are first come-first serve. You need to bring your own lock. If you forget your lock, we can rent you a lock on a per visit basis. Most of our members bring a towel from home, but if you prefer, you can sign up for our towel service and receive a fresh, clean towel each time you visit.
How do I set an appointment for my equipment orientation?
We want you to get started properly by having a trainer demonstrate the proper techniques for using the cardio and strength machines. To schedule your orientation, stop by the service desk or call Lindsey at 447-2400. Please try to keep the appointments you make since last-minute cancellations or no-shows are hard on staff scheduling and your fellow members who desire help.
How do I work in on the floor?
If you wish to share equipment with another member, simply ask, “May I work in?” When you take your turn, finish your set or exercise in a timely manner and then allow others to share. A common mistake is to use a piece of equipment and then rest on it between sets. This does not allow others to share and slows down the pace of the gym. To rest, remove yourself from the piece of equipment you are using and be aware that others may wish to use the equipment that you are happily resting on.
When do I know when it's my turn to use a piece of equipment?
We recommend that you take into consideration the gym use patterns and your own workout habits to ensure that all members get equal access to the facilities. Our busiest times are usually in the early evening after work. If you prefer a fast 30-minute workout, you shouldn't encounter any problems, even during peak hours. However, if you prefer to spend more than 30 minutes on a piece of cardio equipment, we ask that you use the club during off-peak hours. We do not set time limits on the equipment, but we do recommend that members use common sense and consideration when it comes to setting their workout times.
What is that piece of equipment?
It takes a while to learn all the pieces of equipment and what each one does. If you have a question about any piece we have, ask a staff member to show you how it works. Any trainer on the floor can answer whether a particular piece makes sense for the workout you are doing.
How do I complain?
We love complaints and comments! Complaints and comments are how we can learn to do things better. We have a system set up so you can feel comfortable about complaining. If you have a suggestion or complaint, email lkorpal@newtone.com. If it is something that you feel is too serious to send in an email, see one of the managers immediately and let us know what you need.
What is expected of me while I am working out?
As a courtesy to other members, please wipe off equipment after exercising. There are spray bottles and paper towels positioned around the gym, or you may carry a small hand towel and clean as you go. Please return all free weights to their proper place on the racks provided when you are finished using them. Please treat other members and staff with courtesy and respect. Inappropriate behavior or disruptions within the club will not be tolerated.
